Environmental Management System

Consilience Media’s Environmental Management System is certified to Phase 3 of BS 8555, the Acorn Scheme. This means that our company’s attitudes towards environmental issues, activities and management practices have been inspected by an independent body and approved for:

  • commitment to continual environmental improvement
  • the assessment of environmental aspects
  • compliance with legal and other requirement
  • environmental objectives, targets and programmes of improvement

The industry

The print industry is responsible for a significant amount of pollution in the UK. Conventional inks contain minerals and solvents which, when sent to landfill, can contaminate the water table. Furthermore, conventional litho printing consumes vast amounts of water, converting it to toxic effluent which must then be processed. More details of the environmental problems inherent in conventional printing are detailed on our Impacts page, along with some of the advantages in choosing greener print.

Greener printers

We have good working relationships with some of the UK's most environmentally responsible printers - who are leading the way in 'greening' the print industry, through the use of waterless, reduced-water and reduced- or no-alcohol presses and vegetable-based inks. Chemicals are further eliminated from the printing process through the use of Computer-to-Plate technology. Also, we offer print stock that is recycled (100% post-consumer waste, or from FSC accredited, sustainably managed sources – or a mixture of both).

Working with suppliers

It is our policy that, wherever possible, we use printers who have implemented environmental management system standards. For example, Stephens & George, printers of IEMA's 'the environmentalist' magazine – are accredited to the environmental management system standard ISO14001, and use vegetable-based inks.
